Between Jerusalem and L.A.

Fresh from his appearance as an honorary guest at the Jerusalem Film Festival, American producer Lawrence Bender will be one of the central figures at the 37th Israeli Film Festival in Los Angeles, which opens on February 4 and runs through February 19.

The festival will launch with a gala evening attended by Sharon Stone, who will present Bender with the festival’s Visionary Award, while Israeli director Eran Riklis will receive a Cinematic Achievement Award. The opening screening will be “A Letter to David,” directed by Tom Shoval.

Founded and directed by Israeli musician and events producer Meir Fenigstein, the Israeli Film Festival aims to promote Israeli cinema in the United States and will present a selection of recent Israeli feature films and documentaries, alongside tributes and meetings with filmmakers. At a time when the industry is facing threats of boycotts, it will be interesting to see if the event attracts protests.

Among the films screening this year are “On Dogs and People,” “Pink Lady” and “From October 6 to October 7.” The program also includes a tribute to the late actor Alon Aboutboul, who passed away this year after collapsing on a beach at the age of 61, and appearances by Israeli filmmakers and actors. Screenings will take place at venues across Los Angeles, including the Saban Theatre in Beverly Hills, Regal North Hollywood and the Fine Arts Theatre.
